Sometimes the best solution for home design is to get back to the basics. For me, summer is a great time to hit the reset and refresh button. The weather is warmer and shedding unnecessary items is liberating. The Scandinavians have mastered the art of simple and back-to-basic design. Our next filter is “Scandinavian Summer,” and it is going to make your apartment feel light and fresh.
Speaking of summer, I want to share with you a place that is on the top of my bucket list for a summer retreat and a big source of inspiration for this filter! It is a small cottage on a lake in Finland. The space is called Kekkilä Garden and what was supposed to be a place to store tools instead became a perfect summer sanctuary.
As you can see, the use of space here is absolutely stunning, and the simplicity of the design allows for the natural beauty to fully resonate. A comfortable bed and a few house plants here proves that less really can be more. Disclaimer: you must bring your own reading material.
Scandinavian Summer is all about form and function. Furniture is modern but welcoming. Space is often utilized very well to make the room feel more spacious and open. Hanging white shelves are great for this! The tones of this design are very neutral. Beiges, whites, blacks and browns are combined to create a calm and serene environment. If you are going to use a pop of color, I would recommend something like a pale blue or pink. Warm textures, like a thick white wool blanket draped over a reading chair, are great for this space as well. After all, summer doesn’t last long in Scandinavia! There should be a lot of light woods and metals to complement the neutral colors of the space and to give the home that slight bit of edge.
Scandinavian Summer is all about simplicity and bare bone aesthetic. Like a great slice of cheese pizza, sometimes extras are just not needed.
